A high school is an environment charged with raging hormones, mood swings and students forming different 'clicks'. It is common to have different set of groups within a classroom, and at times this can be detrimental to the learning experience. You can give hours of lectures to students on the benefits of team work but it is likely to fall on deaf years. It is not your fault, the students are at an age where they think they know everything that is to know. Arranging team bonding exercises is one of the best ways to impart the importance of team spirit, leadership qualities and cooperation.

Students should be made aware of the importance of team work at an early age and made to understood that this will help them in their careers, relationship and all round personal development. It has been observed that students tend to learn a lot from their peer group and team bonding exercises will help them know each others strengths and work areas.

Team Building Activities

One of the most important things when planning team bonding exercises is to remember to have rules and ensure they are followed. Students sometimes tend to go overboard when they are doing any kind of team activity. If you know kids you will also know that their propensity to make fun of others is quite high, so do not design potentially embarrassing games. Make it clear at the very beginning that this is a learning activity and not limited to having fun. At times it is crucial to set a few ground rules and let the students know the objective of the game.

Follow the Leader
All you will need for this team building activity is colored chalk and 6-8 feet of open space. Draw a column with three rows and 10-12 columns. Each square should just be big enough for a student to put one foot inside the box. Color the squares in different colors do not use more than 3 colors, for example, column 1 row 1 is red color, then column 2 row 1 is blue and column 3 row 1 is green. Interchange the colors for the next row so that you do not have a sequence. Divide the class into 4-5 groups, ensure that no two good friends are on the same team. A team member from each team will be blindfolded and will be assigned a color, other team members can shout out directions to help the member navigate the course. The blindfolded teammate can only step on the colored box that has been assigned. All members from a team have to complete the course and the team with the best time will win. Such team bonding activities for high school students can impart important lessons about personal development and tolerance.

Numbers Game
Number games can be a great way to instill some knowledge about work ethics and team spirit. There are many team building exercises for high school students geared towards propagation of benefits of working together rather than working against each other. One simple game that you could have as part of team building activities is the Numbers game. Draw a big Square on the ground and inside the square draw 10-12 small circles. Now number these circles also cut circular pieces of paper to coincide with the number of circles you have in the box. Divide the participants in teams of 4-5 members in each team, hand over the paper cut outs to a member who is going to go first ensure they are not arranged numerically. The member has to place the circular cut outs on the circles that are drawn in the box. For example John from team 1 is up first he has to put the circular cut out of number 4 on the circle drawn in the box with number 4 written in it. John has to quickly finish the cut outs and tag another member from his team who will then have to retrieve the papers in the same order that john has put them. Team members can help their mates by keeping track of the sequence. This is a time trial game and the team with the best time wins. This is a fun exercise to build communication and bonding amongst the team members, you could also have a prize for the winning team as motivation.

Team building exercises can teach important lessons regarding problem solving, adaptability and decision-making. These exercises are a great tool to build trust and bridge gaps between students, such games also educate students about the importance of planning.
